Tolerance cannot be measured in terms of degrees of intolerance. I am essentially opposed to burning books even when they incite others to violence. But freedom is either an absolute or it is conditioned on not inciting others to violence.
Anything else is rationalized bigotry.
About me
I was born & raised in Australia; a country with an epithet for every race, creed & colour.
I understood that the prejudice I rarely experienced was no different than the prejudice any other minority felt, except it was more public, less discrete. I lived for 3 years in the USA, coming away pro-American, appreciating its diversity & vibrant self-confidence. There were scary bits too but all nations have a good a bad & an ugly side to them. It is in recognising the specificality of a nation that we can appreciate diversity. I lived & worked in Israel for 8 years & served in the IDF.
I moved to the UK in 1986. I do have strong opinions & I am not afraid of self-expression. I have a modest knowledge of Israeli history & politics. I am a great believer in fairness & justice not just but also for the Jewish state. I am a liberal, mugged by reality & a Zionist with a passionate love for Israel & its remarkable diversity. I have a huge concern for the future of Israel and the world in this current climate of unrest & intellectual cowardice.
I love writing & gardening & to translate my passion into my profession would be the realization of a dream.
